Size matters, according to a new survey, claiming that 44% of men have sex using badly-fitting condoms. The finding, doctors say, shows the need for greater awareness regarding the purchase of correct fitting condoms. Although they admit men would probably feel embarrassed about a ‘small, medium or large’ condom sizing system, they say condom manufacturers need to be clearer in terms of labelling. The survey asked 436 men, aged between 18 and 67, about their experiences with using condoms regularly for vaginal sex. Those who used ill-fitting condoms were more than twice as likely to experience the condom breaking or slipping when they had sex. They also experienced irritation on their penises, and found it harder to reach orgasm in some cases. Some found it difficult to maintain an erection. Another worrying finding emerging from the study was that poorly fitting condoms caused several men to give up with the contraceptive halfway through sex, at which point they said they took off the condom – but continued to have sex. This could have led to unwanted pregnancy. It also would have increased the risk of sexually transmitted infection being passed on. The picture painted by this survey is that poorly-fitting condoms not only inhibit pleasure; they also increase the risk of unwanted side-effects resulting from sex. Part of the problem could be that condom manufacturers do not wish to deal with the delicate topic of penis size. It is an embarrassing topic for many men, and a frequent source of insecurity – around 84% of men say they are worried about penis size. The situation, say health experts, could be improved by more open debate, about penis size and choosing a condom that fits, both among manufacturers and men themselves. For men who are perhaps lacking in this department, natural treatments like VigRX have been proven to work |
