Figures revealed last month revealed that there were a record amount of sexually transmitted infection cases in the UK last year. Experts have highlighted the importance for contraception for young women, who were revealed to be most at risk of STIs. Last year GPs in Britain recorded nearly half a million cases of sexually transmitted infections. This 3% increase from the previous year means that, last year, a record amount of cases were diagnosed. Doctors are particularly worried about the amount of young women who were diagnosed with infections such as herpes and chlamydia. Vulnerability Experts believe that many younger women are particularly at risk because they are being persuaded to practice unsafe sex by their partners. The report showed that women who are aged 19-20 are most likely to be diagnosed with an STI. “These figures highlight the vulnerability of young women” said Dr Gwenda Hughes of the Health Protection Agency. “Many studies have shown that young adults are more likely to have unsafe sex and often they lack the skills and confidence to negotiate safer sex” said Dr Hughes. “It’s crucial we communicate messages about safe sex” Condom awareness if often reserved for men, but the issue is becoming an increasingly important one for women too. Recent studies have also revealed that alcohol is having an effect on the amount of women who aren’t using condoms. The research has highlighted the fact that women who drink high levels are more likely to use emergency contraception and are more likely to undergo an abortion. “It’s crucial we communicate messages about safe sex, including condom wearing, and the importance of getting checked out at their nearest GUM clinic if they have had unprotected sex with a new partner” said Dr Kirsty Foster, who also works for the HPA. |
